Happy Birthday Meg!

Yes, today is Meg Ryan's birthday. I've been a big fan of cute little Meg ever since seeing her in "When Harry Met Sally" way back in 1989. That's still my favourite of her films, though I also liked her in "Sleepless in Seattle" and "French Kiss". Lately, Meg has certainly been trying to take on some different types of roles, but I must admit that I prefer her in the light romantic comedies that she's best known for. (Except for "I.Q.", which was a bit of a clunker!)

Anyway, I thought I should celebrate Meg Ryan today by also posting a couple caricatures I've done over the years, including the one below that was featured on my Christmas card way back in 1999. Alas, the Christmas stockings remained unfilled...(sigh)

  2. Hi Pete,

I was looking for a portrait of Walt Disney when Google came up with a link
    to your blog.

I have to admit: You did a great job! I liked it so much, that it became
the start-up page on my browser at once.

Thx for the meg-ryan-picture. I loved her too in "When Harry met Sally".
(Though I think as an actress she's beeing pressed into that Box "Sally"
    ever since.)

I'm sseing forward to your coming post.

    Bye
    Michael from Germany

  4. I ADORE Meg Ryan and also prefer her in her older light-hearted romatic comedy roles. You captured her perky personality quite exquisitely!

  7. Believe it or not, I use to stand in line with Meg Ryan in the Disney commissary back in the eighties.

She had a small role in some forgotten Disney television series. However, we didn't forget her.

In person, she's even cuter -- and pretty darn tall for a woman. One look in those baby blues, and I knew she would one day be a star.

  8. Hey Floyd, you were a lot luckier than me. Back when I was still working in the art dept. at Walt Disney World, one of my co-workers returned back from lunch one day to tell me that he'd been sitting right across from Meg Ryan and Nicole Kidman at one of the restaurants in EPCOT. Damn, I wish I'd joined him for lunch that day!!

  10. Meg has a less than good reputation here in the UK, ever since she appeared on the talk show "Parkinson". Whether rightly or not, I don't think she regained many British fans after that.
    Meg on Parkinson

  11. I just watched the clip you linked to, Andy. I'm not familiar with this Parkinson fellow, but I gather he's a well known interview host in the UK. Meg Ryan is notorious for being leery of doing interviews and I've only seen her on Letterman's show maybe a couple times over these many years. She did seem like a deer in the headlights in this interview and was obviously very uncomfortable with Parkinson's line of questioning. I think the gist of it was clear, though - Meg likes acting as a career, but is uncomfortable with the public attention that comes with stardom. Seems to me that's true of a great many actors who resent the invasion of privacy that stardom leads to. As I watched this interview I just felt sorry for Meg, as it looked like she was regretting her decision to appear on the show in the first place.

  12. It's a difficult clip to watch, isn't it? As I say, it was taken very much as a negative view of Meg in the UK, but that may have had something to do with how loved Parkinson is. If it had been any other show, I think viewers may have been more sympathetic to her.

Of course, someone who has had a lengthy career like Meg should surely know what interviews are like and hence whether they should do them or not. Mind you, Parkinson tends to be somewhat more probing than the likes of Letterman, so many foreign guests are caught off-guard.

  14. Hi Arun,

Yes, as a matter of fact a caricature of ol' Dino was featured in my very first blog post, as part of my caricature of The Rat Pack in "Robin and the 7 Hoods". I really should do another one of Dean, though, as I'm a huge fan and would like to portray him in his tux as he used to appear on his TV variety show.
